Chiron: The Wounded Healer

Updated: Feb 26

Studying Chiron is like meditating. It’s not always what you feel like doing, and you don’t always see the benefits while you’re doing it, but afterward, your commitment to the practice pays off.

If you’re looking for the key to the treasure map on your chart, look no further than Chiron. For it is here your greatest potential is found, once you do your inner work. Inner work is honestly looking within. It’s sorting through all the behaviors that are serving you and those that are not. It’s taking a humble approach to self-growth by first acknowledging your weaknesses.

Chiron is an asteroid and is symbolized in your chart by the letter K with a circle underneath. Once you locate Chiron, you can begin looking into where you experienced wounding in your life. Chiron work can be done through journaling, counseling, tapping, or simply sitting quietly with yourself and asking open-ended questions about why you feel the way you do. Past life regression therapy and hypnosis may help you gain insights into your core wound as well.

The reason your greatest potential lies in Chiron is that once you are aware of your weak spot, you can then have more compassion for yourself and others. Once we recognize we are not perfect, we have more acceptance and tolerance for those around us who have their own imperfections.

Using the understanding of what challenges you the most, can be the catalyst for hope and resilience to those struggling with similar issues. This is the whole point of having the Chiron wound in the first place; to be able to transform your hurts into your greatest spiritual gifts.

Here are some examples of the Chiron wound and their resulting gifts:

Feeling unworthy, not enough, or “too much.” The outcome of healing is: shining your light anyway. Standing in your power anyway. Believing in yourself anyway. And then going out into the world to be a role model for others who are struggling to believe in themselves and be their most authentic selves.

Shame. Feeling like you simply weren’t born with “what it takes.” This wound leads to repressed anger, resentment, fear, overachieving, and depression. It takes a lot of courage to overcome this wound and recognize oneself as whole, perfect, and complete - as is. The outcome of healing is: Feeling free from the limitations of others, having a clear mind and a confident spirit. Believing in oneself unconditionally. And then going out into the world as a confident leader and one whom others look up to and admire.

The loss of voice. This occurs because we are told that our ideas don’t matter, our opinions aren’t valid, and our creative expressions are not good enough. Thus, we shut down. We may even have throat trouble (5th chakra issues) due to blockages here. The outcome of healing: Speaking up. Creating with abandon. Letting one’s ideas be heard, read, felt, and experienced.

These are just a few examples of the Chiron wound, but there are nine others within the 12 zodiac signs. So now let’s discuss some practical points to consider - no matter where you have your Chiron wound.

It’s okay to be honest with yourself and honest about your pain. It’s okay to let others know that something hurt you. It’s important that you speak up about your pain, otherwise, some people may never even know they’re hurting you.

So, like Chiron, we must come to terms with the truth about how we feel. It’s OKAY to express your pain, your suffering - this is not something to be ashamed of. We ALL hurt somewhere over something.

Healing begins when we take responsibility for healing our own wounds.

This is because, even if you didn’t cause your wound, you have been holding on to it all this time as an illusion that’s been projected out from you. And, whenever you project out you continuously attract in circumstances and people that confirm your false belief. This is why it's so hard to overcome.

Thus, we need to change our attitudes about ourselves first and foremost. We need to cultivate self-forgiveness, self-love, and self-acceptance to truly heal. Then, we need to use our wounds to relate to and connect with other people; no longer feeling sorry for ourselves, but instead empowered by our own ability to overcome our perceived shortcomings.

Chiron’s major symbolism and teachings:

-We are the cause of our suffering - because once we understand that no one can make us feel better but ourselves, we have the power to turn things around.

-While it may seem that others are hurting us, that is only because we unconsciously project our hurts onto them.

-As hard as it is to be honest with ourselves about our need to take responsibility for our wounds, it is ultimately the most liberating and freeing thing we can do.

Stand in your power. Take your power back. And accept yourself for your imperfections.

If there's one thing the story of Chiron can teach us, it's that he had to give up one of the things that was most precious to him (immortality). So, the lesson for us is what do we need to give up to end our own patterns of suffering? What thought patterns? What behaviors? What limiting beliefs?

Chiron’s wound is rooted in psychological pain - the thoughts and emotions that trigger us regularly.

Chiron is where you’ll experience the most healing once you do your inner work. (So look at your chart now and see where Chiron is!) It’s also where our wound originated - either in this life or a past life. But even if it was a past life, this is the area you are triggered by it now.

As you move forward and bravely examine your own chart to see where your Chiron lives, take these messages to heart:

  • You cannot be “all things to all people.” There is nothing as liberating as not caring about the status quo - not caring about what others think of you - and the opinions you hold about yourself and everyone else.

  • Don’t let your mental attachments and addictions harm your body, your relationships, and your potential for this life.

  • Our projections are the cause of our triggering. Once we understand how our assumptions about ourselves are being reconfirmed by the words and behaviors of others, we can then look within and start changing our beliefs about ourselves. Then whatever projections we do experience will be positive and self-affirming.

  • The wounded healer is asking you to be brave. Though many people will not accept the concept that we need to face our deepest wounds before we can rise to our greatest potential and live our best lives, that's exactly what Chiron is asking you to do. So, as you traverse the road of self-healing, remember that being an outsider is okay; it takes a strong individual to live an authentic life, but the rewards of self-contentment will be well worth the sacrifice.
