Human Design vs. Astrology: What's the Difference and How Can Both Help You?

Astrology and Human Design are both excellent resources for anyone seeking self-knowledge.  Rooted in ancient wisdom, each discipline has unique elements that empower us to reach a deeper understanding of ourselves.  Both provide insights into our dominant personalities and the way we relate energetically to the world.

Astrology is the study of celestial bodies and how their movement through space and time affects us psychologically and spiritually.  The Human Design system consists of various teachings including Astrology, I Ching, the Hindu chakra system, the Jewish Kabbalah, quantum physics, and genetics all combined to give us a person’s energetic makeup.

Astrology has been used for the past 4,000 years to guide civilizations across the globe.  It provides guidance on everything from your life purpose to your core wound, to compatibility with another person and choosing the best career. Human Design was created by Alan Krakower (also known as Ra Uru Hu) in the 1980s.  It came as a spiritual download that he received and used to create the ideology behind Human Design. Essentially, Human Design describes your energy signature - how you use your energy most effectively.

Both Astrology and Human Design use birth charts based on your date of birth, time, and location to provide a personalized cosmic map.  Human Design uses a BodyGraph chart to illustrate your nine centers, 64 energy gates, and 36 channels.  All of this information forms your Human Design “type” which can be one of these five options: Manifester, Generator, Manifesting Generator, Projector, or Reflector.

Through the BodyGraph, Human Design gives you a detailed map of how you use your energy and how it’s best matched with your unique gifts and life purpose. Just like exploring your astrological birth chart tells you much more than your Sun sign, reviewing your BodyGraph tells you what your inner authority is – which describes how you make decisions, as well as your strategy – which is how to align your energy to create the best outcomes.

Here are some key differences between Human Design and Astrology:

Astrology’s entire framework is based on the sky.  Without the Sun, Moon, planets, stars, and asteroids, Astrology would cease to exist.  Human Design draws on various disciplines to produce one synthesized system of knowledge.

Astrology has been around for thousands of years, and Human Design was created about 40 years ago.

In Astrology, you can continuously study the planets through transits and progressions to see how your life is evolving.  In Human Design, your chart is fixed, so once you have your BodyGraph created, this is what you have to learn from.

While Human Design provides an energy blueprint that is set before birth, Astrology leaves room for free will.  The stars show you the basics of who you are, but what you do with that information is completely up to you. In Astrology, you can look at a transit chart to see what lies ahead and choose to act differently.

Astrology encourages an understanding of planetary transits to constantly grow and evolve.  Human Design stresses the importance of living in accordance with your consistent design.

The Similarities:

-Both systems of knowledge bring greater self-awareness.

-Both systems can be used together to help you grow.

-Each system shares valuable information on how to relate to the world around you.

-Both systems can support you in making important life decisions including your career, relationships, and overall well-being.

-Studying either system will create self-confidence in knowing who you are and how you operate.

In Summary

Both Astrology and Human Design can assist us in learning more about ourselves.  Each empowers us to take conscious actions aligned with our dominant personalities and energy types.  Understanding one’s strategy and authority in Human Design can help a person make better decisions while taking into account the planetary movements in Astrology can help us navigate our lives and evolve.  Each system of knowledge has a place in our lives, and hopefully you are encouraged to research each discipline further.
