I’ve always had a special affinity for Saturn. Maybe it’s because, as an Aquarius, it’s one of my ruling planets – along with Uranus – or maybe having my Sun sign at only three degrees of Aquarius, it’s close enough for me to have strong Capricorn energy. Or, even more likely, it’s because I have three other planets in Capricorn (Mercury, Neptune, and Jupiter) but I also think part of it was how I was raised.
My parents were hard workers. They instilled values of self-discipline, self-reliance, and being conscientious of one’s own efforts. I appreciate that because it has helped shape who I am today and what I value. Learning astrology only further enforced my conditioned upbringing. And what I mean by this is, nothing is a coincidence. When I learned that I have a lot of Capricorn energy it reinforced why my upbringing had strong elements of Saturn.
The Truth About Saturn
So, what does any of this have to do with Saturn? Saturn rules the sign Capricorn, and in traditional astrology, Saturn is referred to as the “greater malefic.” This is because many feared that Saturn would bring about obstacles, challenges, and delays. And, truth be told, it does! But how many of you have ever grown wiser and become stronger without some resistance? When life was just “easy”?
A good example of Saturn energy showing up is in an athlete. Picture a football player getting up before dawn to go to practice. Or a runner hitting the trail every day no matter how tired, sore, or unmotivated she feels. That’s discipline. That’s Saturn. So how can you harness the energy of this persistent planet to create more positive results in your life? First, have a plan. Second, stick to that plan no matter how you feel, and third, allow your results to come slowly over time. Don’t expect fast results where you have Saturn. This is an area where your patience and tenacity will be tested but for good reason. Saturn always rewards hard workers.
“Human beings do not earn free will except through self-discovery. And they do not attempt self-discovery until things become so painful, that they have no other choice.”
-Liz Greene
Another wonderful quality about Saturn is that it pushes us to know ourselves better; to discover the truth of who we are and what we are capable of. Here's a good example of this: a young boy sees an expensive toy in a store window and begs his mother to have it. She responds, “You’ll have to mow a lot of lawns before you can afford that.” So, what does the boy do? He knocks on every neighbor’s door with an offer to cut their grass each week. And sooner than later, he’s saved enough money to buy himself that toy. Do you know how much more he is going to appreciate that toy because his mother did not just say, “Okay, I’ll buy it for you"?
That’s the whole point of Saturn: to show us what’s worth working for; to show us the work that’s worthy of us.
One of the greatest teachings in astrology is that each planet helps us live in alignment with a principle that helps us build a better life.
By recognizing the qualities Saturn provides us with, we can live stronger lives; lives with more integrity, dignity, self-respect, and honor. Saturn is the part of you that keeps your promises, upholds your commitments, and does the right thing instead of the easy thing. Saturn keeps you honest, it distinguishes right from wrong. It keeps you from giving in to temptations and taking shortcuts.
Perhaps you know someone who is highly self-disciplined and another who appears to have no self-discipline at all. An interesting experiment would be to compare these two people’s birth charts to see who has the most “Capricornian energy” based on planets in Capricorn or planets in the 10th house, or Saturn strongly aspected in the chart. What you will find is that Saturn shapes a person's outlook, values, and their level of self-motivation.
Summarization of Saturn
Saturn can be your friend or foe depending on how you view its energy. Are you afraid of hard work? Saturn may bring about more suffering to learn that hard work is not such a bad thing. Are you an overly ambitious, high-soaring achiever? Then your Saturn may be strong, but you may have to watch out for other areas in your life becoming unbalanced - such as your health. Wherever you have Saturn, there is one thing you need more of: patience. Patience, persistence, and a willingness to keep going.
Though things may not come easily here, you are learning how not to allow obstacles to stop you in your tracks, not to take setbacks as "signs" that it's time to give up, and not to see delays as reasons to "become distracted" by something else. Think of Saturn as a hunting dog. Imagine the way it follows the scent until it's found its prey. It might zig zag here and there, and lose the scent from time to time, but it stays on it.
Evolutionarily, Saturn's placement in the birth chart reflects an unresolved issue or hardship that needs extra attention now so it does not continue to limit us in this life.
Here are some questions to ponder as you reflect on the nature of Saturn expressing through you:
-Where do you have Saturn in your chart?
-Can you relate to having more difficulties in this area?
-What have you done (or will you do) to improve yourself and face the challenges that life has brought you here?
I leave you with my personal quote that I read every day for inspiration before I sit down to work in my office: "Structure and self-discipline bring freedom." Though it may sound paradoxical, it is psychologically liberating.
